Ukraine still fighting for freedom

A video is circulating of a crowd of Ukrainians blocking Berkut, Communists & Socialists from placing flowers at the Taras Shevchenko memorial.

It doesn't say where, but it's obviously in Ukraine.

I suppose it doesn't matter which city, specifically. Pretty symbolic that it's happening at all, in this day and age.

See it here.

Pawlina,

It does to some degree surprise me, but not compared to what happened in March 9, 2001 which was the culmination of the Ukraine without Kuchma movement.

Maybe Simon from Ukrainian Time would be as so kind to dig up his archives and send you a copy of my report.

The evening of March 9, while living with Vlad Kaskiv we put up over a dozen students from western Ukraine to save them from the Berkut and other Kuchma cronies running around town rounding up students.

Let me see what I can dig up on this video. I had some work to do that day related to the business I am now in, and not what I was up to in 2001, working with democracy development issues in Ukraine.

Oh just to add...some background of what was going on at that time can be found in a report by Stephen Bandera, to which I made useful comment and contribution.

It is the same place in front of the Red Corpus of Taras Shevchenko Univeristy... Clearly visible in the background.

Wow, Vasyl, talk about being in the trenches, in the middle of a revolution. Molodetz!

And here we sit on the other side of the world, in comfortable and complacent oblivion...

Pawlina, actually I started doing some radio after Gongadze's disappearance. Valentyna Golash did a 45 minute interview with me when I was back in Montreal over the Christmas holidays way back then, and then Simon asked me if I would be interested in doing radio. As a result I covered a number of crazy events. During the Povstan' Ukraino protests I managed to get an interview with Yulia Tymoshenko, that was at about 1 a.m. on Bankova Street near the Presidential Adminstration...

Wow! I hope that stuff is archived somewhere!
